Some really strange stains
July 22nd, 2009Years ago, Evelinda and I wrote about Madame Paulette, a New York City-based leading custom couture cleaner to the stars (madamepaulette.com). Meryl Streep, Naomi Campbell, David Copperfield, Donald Trump, Lady Di and Barbara Walters are all clients. A third generation dry cleaning family, with a passion and dedication to removing hard-to-remove stains, the company recently celebrated its 66th anniversary with a huge soiree.
As you might do at a dry cleaning do, talk turned to stains. Fur designer Dennis Basso shared an embarassing story: He was having lunch with Joan Collins and spilled red wine all over her cream suede suit. Madame Paulette staff talked about the worst stains they had treated: “Baby poop all over a beautiful silk headboard.” The most popular stains: dogs and vomit. An employee for designer Norma Kamali said: “People don’t tan anymore. We get bathing suits returned coverred in makeup and fake bronzer.”
Ah, the challenges facing a cleaner to the stars.
Tip from the owner: “Seltzer water is just carbonation.; it doesn’t do much. Salt just acts as an abrasive.”
