Porn for Fashionistas: Fake shopping –could anything be more frustrating?

October 27th, 2009

articleinline1.jpgarticlelarge1.jpgThe newest internet attraction: Avatar-driven social networking sites where you can shop to your heart’s content: no restraints, no budget, no credit card debt.  Why? Because it is all fake!!!! It’s simulated shopping.  Go to websites like There.com, IMVU.com or Second Life.com, sign in, create your own avatar or personality and then cyber shop. Any designer, handbag or jewelry is now within your reach — on line only.  Here’s an excerpt from the There website.  Am I the only one that finds this a bit scary?

There is everything you’ve ever imagined and wished for. It’s the place you’ve dreamed about and hoped for. It’s all the good things in life, and if you can’t find them, you can make them… There is a place where you look on the outside the way you look on the inside. Feeling awesome today? You can look awesome. Feeling like you want to make some heads snap around? You can look knock-down gorgeous and totally buff. Best of all, everyone is friendly. They’re either an old friend, a new friend, or an about-to-be-friend.

This sounds like dialogue from some creepy science fiction movie.  Do people have so much time on their hands that they can spend it fake shopping? And we thought Twitter was a waste.
