Nothing sells fashion like the Oscars
February 4th, 2010
March 7 — D-Day for the fashion world. The Academy Awards red carpet photos help sell millions of dollars of haute couture. Fashion experts are predicting which actress will sell the most clothing. Drum role please: Sandra Bullock. Her everyday girl image helps to sell gowns - like this Bottega Veneta purple dress she wore to this year’s Golden Globes. (Critic moment: I hated “The Blind Side”–so predictable, you had to be blind not to be able to guess the ending in the first five minutes of the film. Also, how hard is it to play a Southern princess? Anyone can do it. It’s such a stereotype. No best actress Oscar for you, Ms. Bullock.)
Next, fashion experts like the sales appeal of British actress Carey Mulligan, nominated for “An Education.” I wonder about this as I bet few Americans saw this movie or know who Mulligan is. She chose a Nina Ricci gown for the Golden Globes. Frankly this was too plain and mature a look for her. (Critic moment: Film critics raved over this film. I don’t get it. It was a glorified Masterpiece Theater epidsode.)
Finally these platform sandals by Burberry Prorsum were worn by Jessica Alba at the People’s Choice awards. These ugly, knotted, clunky shoes generated one of the highest number of “click throughs”to retail websites. Women actually wanted to buy these monstrosities at prices over $500 (based on the price of other Burberry sandals.) How much wear are you actually going to get with these?
