Styles That Emphasize The Waist

October 16th, 2007
Hi, Style Matters ladies!
I love your column, but I am worried. With the rise of “styles that now emphasize the waist”, what’s a girl with love handles supposed to do? I am a size 5 in pants, but because of my “muffin top” physique, styles that emphasize my waist only make me look wide and hippy - not really the look I’m going for. I certainly do not blame Style Matters for this icky-for-my-body-trend, but I would love some tips for how to make belted waists, wide-leg pants, etc. work.Thanks!-Alexandra H.

Dear Alexandra,

Thank you for reading Style Matters, we always enjoy hearing from our stylish readers. It’s holiday gift buying time, so pick up our book for your friends, the book info is on our website. There is always something out there for every body type. And sometimes we must all pass on a trend, but these trends will work for you. You didn’t say how tall you are, but if you are vertically challenged (like we are) you will have to look for pant legs that are wide, but not HUGE. Wear with very high platform shoes and let the pant cover the shoe completely. Don’t belt, wear your shirt out over your waist. You are a skinny muffin top, we can relate.

So here’s what you can try. Wear the skirt/pant in dark color and top, say black. Wear a medium width belt, not the 3 plus inch corset belts. Put a jacket over the top and belt. You will get the look, but the jacket balances you out and you will look very current and thin. Even consider keeping the belt the same color as the outfit. As an example, black skirt, top, belt, layer with a jacket in black or any color you want.

Good luck.

Winter is coming. Are Ugg style boots still in? Can you wear them with skirts?
